Naming  Ceremony

"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
– Elizabeth Stone

"Your child – your ceremony"

A Naming ceremony is something you choose to do.

There are no legal requirements, stipulations or consequences for you or anyone else who's involved, nor is anyone legally bound by the promises they make.

A Naming ceremony is a personal choice – not a legal one.

It doesn't replace or complement your legal requirement to register the birth of a child with your local Register Office.

A Naming ceremony is about the core relationship between the parents and their child. In choosing to have a Naming ceremony what you're saying, in effect, is that you want the focus of the ceremony to be your love for your child.

This is a sample Naming Ceremony

Today Mary  and John have invited us to take part in this ceremony to express their love and commitment to their child Rebecca

We are all deeply touched by the birth of children . That children are born into this world in innocence and pure love, is indeed a miracle. We all share in the joy of Rebecca just as we all share the responsibility of shaping them into people. Rebecca needs everyone's good and caring influence as we offer her our love, our knowledge and our wisdom.

Naming the child

Now it is time to formally welcome Rebecca with love as we bestow her names.

Rebecca was born on the 1st January 2014 at Matai Bay

A name is very important. It distinguishes us from others and gives us a sense of belonging in our family and community. Rebecca, your name has been chosen with love and with the strength of heritage. We therefore name you Rebecca Mary- we wish you long life and happiness in a loving and peaceful world. May you bring joy to your parents, your family and friends.

Promises by Parents

We will endeavour to bring Rebecca up in a home filled with love and kindness, and teach her to have tolerance for others and respect for humanity and the earth which supports us

Godparents promise:

Godparents are very special people who are always available to help guide and give support, and to offer loyalty and love, and to be an example to those under their care.

Mary and John  have asked Susan and Jonathan  to be godparents/life mentors  for their child Rebecca Mary,  to stand together with her in the responsibilities they have accepted today.

Susan and Jonathan do you promise to keep careful watch over Rebecca until she grows to be an adult and to always be ready to advise, encourage and comfort her.

Hopes for the future

Rebecca Mary we all offer our blessings to you. May you grow in health of body and mind to full adulthood, and may it be your good fortune to play some worthy part in making life more pleasant for those whose paths you cross.

speaking to Rebecca

May the strength of the wind and the light of the sun

The softness of the rain and the mystery of the moon

Reach you and fill you.

May beauty delight you and happiness uplift you

May wonder fulfill you and love surround you

May your step be steady and your arm be strong

May your heart be peaceful and your word be true

May you seek to learn, may you learn to live

May you live to love, and you love - always
